The next week started off with a successful Steering Committee on Franzi’s project (a presentation of interim project results) and a fun team dinner at a Steakhouse in Wisconsin.
Alex got to spend the week in New York. He did not complain as this allowed him to attend two-wheel-Tuesday on Tuesday night.
Also he could stop by at the Moto Social on Thursday night. This is a relatively newly established event happening once a month in different cities. The idea is to bring together people and grow the motorcycle community. Alex met the guys organizing the event some weeks before. Actually one of them (Johnny Puetz) is also from Germany and now focuses on making short clips related to two wheels. Check out his Youtube channel! This time the event was at Regina’s Grocery. It almost felt like being in a normal job. Working from 8am until 8pm and still having some time for doing some fun stuff.
Thursday night Franzi’s flight was not delayed for once so we could revive our ritual of going to Mighty Quinn’s and enjoy some Pulled Pork. Friday night after work we cleaned the apartment and rewarded us with a drink at Boris & Horton (you remember? The dog café we already visited before). There were so many sausage dogs that night, which made us really happy! Little Murphy and his crazy ears made us especially happy.
Friday was also the day, or let’s say night, where Franzi’s manager Philipp from her last project in Germany came to visit. He also had a friend (Joern) from Washington coming to the city. He just recently moved there from Wolfsburg, Germany (which company might he be working for?!?) Since Philipp’s flight got delayed, we hung out with him first. After an aperitif at home we had a pizza at Motorino in our street.
We then moved to the Meatpacking district, had a drink at the Standard beer garden and then went on to the Soho house. This was also when and where Philipp finally arrived after a painfully long Uber ride. We ended the night (or better started the morning) after a couple more drinks at Katz’s Delicatessen with a Pastrami sandwich and then walked home experiencing the weirdness of New York City streets at night.
The next day, we kicked-off with a bagel from Tompkins Square Bagels. Next, we walked towards the west side of Manhattan to meet our friends at HEART, a small open-air bar, on the Porch on the High Line. Before we also took a short walk through the Chelsea market.
From there we went to the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey. Franzi and Alex are not big into Lacrosse, but Philipp was a professional player in his youth. The game was top-notch: Premier League, Archers against Redwoods. The stadium was not very busy, but overall it was a great experience. The sun was shining, and we had a lot of fun watching the Archers win in a close match. Finally, another live sport here in the US that offers some speed and less breaks than other US sports as football or baseball.
After we made our way back to the city and said goodbye, we walked by Washington Square park and stumbled over the last minutes of the Hare Krishna Festival and some opera singers giving free concerts in the park. We enjoyed the feeling of the park and watching all different kinds of people. We then went on to get some groceries and cooked a nice dinner.
Sunday started with picking up our motorcycles and a breakfast at Spiegel. Unfortunately, our original plans got delayed after the very same error from before occurred at Alex new bike again. Luckily we were in Brooklyn not too far away from the dealership when it happened. We immediately went again to Triumph Brooklyn and Alex (who was quite bugged) demanded a replacement bike until the error will be finally resolved. He got a beaten-up Triumph Tiger 1200 – better than nothing and we were able to continue our ride.
We drove to the Floyd Bennett Field, which used to be the first airport of New York City, and is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area today. Since it is so spacious, we went there to practice some motorcycle skills as Franzi has not been driving for so long and is working on feeling a bit more comfortable riding in the city.
To unwind afterwards, we went to the beach – Fort Tilden – which is right by the Atlantic Ocean and supposedly one of the nicer beaches of New York City. It does make you feel like you are at the coast in France!
Since it was a bit windy, we made our way back into the city and visited the Denim Festival. A little convention where different manufacturers showcase different products and their unique materials like raw and selvedge denim. Alex got a pair of shoes for free and both of us got a denim hat!
We ended the eventful weekend with a visit to the park and dinner at home. This was a busy week and weekend – it’s really hard to just take some time to do nothing in this city, so that’s the plan for the next weekend!
😍I really enjoy reading your Blog. One could manage some awesome days in NY without further preparation 🤗.
One can feel the earth moving 🇺🇸 a bit.
