Our first day of vacation

Now was finally the first day we really took off and enjoyed our vacation without getting anything done. To get a relaxed start to the day we had a Bagel at Black Seed Bagel (a place similar to Tomkins Square Bagel) and then walked through the Financial district to the Staten Island Ferry.

We took the Ferry, which is actually free, passing the Statue of Liberty and offering impeccable views of the skyline.

Once in Staten Island, we immediately took the next Ferry back to Manhattan without leaving the Ferry terminal and then walked from Battery Park to the Brooklyn Bridge. We walked across the Brooklyn Bridge (the first time for Franzi) in the sun and enjoyed the views like many many other people.

Over in Brooklyn, we had lunch at Shake Shak, a burger chain which actually sprouted from a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park back in 2004. We just could not bring ourselves to try the famous shakes because the calorie labels were just too frightening in combination with the food (around 1,000 for a single shake) – next time we’ll just got for milkshakes or just ignore the calories 🙂

Afterwards, we went to an art exhibition by CJ Hendry – a young woman who does incredible hyper realistic drawings with colored pencils. The place had a huge jumping castle and was a whole lot of fun!

Back home we ordered our first piece of furniture (the aforementioned IKEA bed) for our new apartment and made some good old sandwiches for dinner! – We already started to miss German bread.
