A half-marathon by foot

On our first full day in New York, we wanted to explore a couple of neighborhoods to figure out where we really want to live. We took a walk starting in the East Village and had our first typical American breakfast at Tompkins Square Bagels (an institution in the East Village!).

Walking through Greenwich Village, we made our first stop at the cafe Fairfax, where we had coffee and tee while planing the upcoming days. To accommodate our move, our company provided us with a so called welcome agent – Rosemary. She supported us in finding an apartment, setting up our bank accounts, getting our social security numbers and answering any questions we might have. The day before, she sent us a bunch of listings to go through. In the cafe we took the time to go through the listings, prioritize which apartments in which areas we would like to look at and which viewings we want to schedule. Of course using an Excel sheet as management consultants or Germans do.

Then we continued our walk through the West Village, walked The High Line and visited the Union Square Greenmarket (where we brought our first German-like bread).

We then explored Soho and sat down for an afternoon wine and just watched the people of New York stroll displaying all of their uniqueness at the Cafe Gitane. After more than 20km (ca. 12.5 miles) of walking during the day, we were quite exhausted and just ended the day at a little Thai restaurant around the corner (Tai Thai).
